Analysis Of Pablo Picassos Guernica - 1228 Words

Throughout history, art has been a powerful medium for political expression. Strong, moving images create a visual experience that calls for global attention to a cause. One of the most famous examples of using art to bring the world’s focus to a cause is Pablo Picasso’s painting, Guernica. In 1937, Francisco Franco, the ruler of Spain, allowed German and Italian planes to bomb a small town, called Guernica, in order to test their bombing tactics. Guernica became the result of Picasso’s outrage to the aerial attacks. Within the painting, he crafts symbols to represent the horror brought to the town of Guernica by the government. Picasso uses different art principles and elements to show the brutalization and chaos caused by Franco’s†¦show more content†¦Muted colors add the confusion in the painting and make it difficult to distinguish where one figure begins and another ends. Picasso captures the raw emotions felt by his countryman by emphasizing the panic within Guernica’s colors. However, Picasso utilizes the white colors of the painting for his message as well. At the top of the painting there is a white lightbulb, surrounded by white light. The single light illuminates the chaos below. The white light stands out in a dark background. Picasso uses the symbol of the lightbulb as the symbol of knowledge, announcing that he knows about the war crimes Franco committed in exchange for political favors. Light colors show the world the suffering of Guernica; it forces the world to react to the violence. Picasso demands a global response to protest the aerial bombings. Masterfully, he crafts the dark and light aspects of the painting to expose the terror created by Franco’s regime. Animals intermixed with the people in the painting add further meaning to the brutal scene within Guernica. The bull, a symbol for the violence of bullfighting in Spain, represents Franco. The bull’s white face and horns stand over the woman cradling her dead child. Picasso gives ownership of the attacks to Franco by placing the bull over the mother. Buddhist and Christian Prayer: A Comparison in Practice and Purpose At first glance the traditions of Christianity and Buddhism appear very different from each other. One centers around a God that was at one time physically manifest on earth in the human form of his son Jesus Christ, the other primarily worships a historical figure that gained divine status through enlightenment. This assessment is broad at best, especially in the case of Buddhism where the Theravada and Mahayana traditions differ significantly. Christianity also has division within itself, the most prominent being between the Roman Catholic and Protestant systems. There are however, despite obvious differences, some very interesting similarities between Buddhism and†¦show more content†¦For instance, both traditions make use of beads during the performance of prayer. Pure Land Buddhism uses a string of beads that are fingered while invoking the name of the celestial Amitabha, or Amida Buddha. A ritual that is very close to the Roman Catholic practice of counting prayers and praying with a rosary. Pure Land Buddhism thus displays a strong resemblance to devotional Christianity, with a God-figure (Omitofo), a mediator (Guanyin), and a prayerful devotion resembling the rosary (Amore and Ching 273). The mediator for Chinese Pure Land prayer is Guanyin, a feminized version of the boddhisatva Avalokitesvara. Guanyin is very similar to the virgin Mary of Roman Catholicism, and as such is sometimes called the virgin Mary of east Asia (Amore and Ching 247) as the bodhisattva she acts as the assistant to the celestial Buddha; Amitabha (Omitofo in Chinese) who is seen as the giver of grace and salvation much the same as God is seen as the giver of grace and salvation and Mary as the mediator or assistant in Roman Catholicism (Amore and Ching 273). These observations display a definite similarity in prayer techniques between the traditions in question. Apart from the training sessions and automated tools, it is also essential to understand the organizational culture and specifications as well. For instance, the work culture in a law firm is different as compared to that of an educational institute or an investment bank. There are also set of policies and regulations that are followed across every organization which are also required to be understood clearly. There is a lot of competition in the current era and it is essential to posses certain skills that may allow an individual to emerge as a distinguished self. Effective communication abilities are the essential skills that would allow the individual to stand out from the rest and would also allow faster growth in a specific profile or organization. Therefore, these skills must be worked upon and acquired at all times and shall also be enhanced in frequent intervals to adapt the latest techniques and methodologies t hat are available (Blizard, 2012). Some of the must have transferable skills include leadership ability, team work, ability to manage time efficiently and effectively, problem solving and decision making abilities, negotiation capabilities along with ability to motivate self and team and organizational abilities. Leadership abilities of the employees along with the ability and dedication to work hard as a team were the skills that were evaluated to be highly in demand. It is because at every level in the job and for all the roles across all the domains, it is essential that an individual showcases highest amount of productivity for self and for the team as well. The same would result in the higher success rates for the projects and the success of the organization as a whole. The skills that are lesser in demand were evaluated to be imaginative abilities and determination that is put across. In Singapore, the job profiles that are highly in demand are primarily from the domains of medicine, law, finance, human resource, management, politics, education, and sales and marketing along with information technology. These are the fields that have the roles and responsibilities that are based upon a defined set of protocols and work structure. There is usually lesser scope of imagination to add in to the roles. However, there is always a scope of innovation present in these fields which is largely associated with technical knowledge and aptitude. Apart from these skil ls, the ability to solve problems and make decisions in a quick and smart manner is also something that the employers look for. There are often risk situations while on job which require the individual to act quickly and smartly in a composed manner such that the problems are solved without an impact on the project progress.
